Just the Facts for the ECO-FRIENDLY Roof Replacement BUYER!

Did you know this about Metal Roofs?

  1. The type of roofing material used on a home has a measurable impact on the quality of rooftop rainwater runoff, which affects natural, agricultural, and human health.
  2. Due to water scarcity and contamination, harvesting rainwater for domestic use is becoming increasingly popular.
  3. Metal roofs are usually recommended as the ultimate roofing material for rainwater collection systems.
  4. Runoff from typical asphalt shingle roofs has been shown in research to contain traces of hazardous lead, arsenic, and mercury.
  5. Rainwater harvested from a metal roof is superior to that from an asphalt shingle roof in terms of total organic carbon, turbidity, and color.
  6. Runoff from asphalt shingle roofs has shown significantly higher concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, which can react with chlorine during disinfection to form harmful byproducts.
  7. Water from roofs with wooden or asphalt shingles can contain chemicals used for waterproofing and weathering treatments.
  8. Coated steel roofs, such as Matterhorn products, greatly reduce the amounts of zinc and copper released by traditional galvanized metal roofs.

Cost Isn't Everything When It's One And Done!

We've been talking a lot about the cost of the metal roof...and it's true - the initial outlay for a metal roof can seem on the surface more expensive than that of an asphalt shingled roof.

But let me share this - a large percentage of the costs can be recouped, especially if you plan on staying in your house for a long time or selling it. While asphalt roofs will likely need replacing every 7-15-20 years, a metal roof can last a lifetime. Therefore, when choosing a roof style the next time you should heavily consider a metal roof over an asphalt roof!

Many Wonder AND Ask: Are Metal Roofs Better than Asphalt Shingles

It's a fact the initial cost of a metal roof can be slightly more than a traditional asphalt shingle roof. However, and this is the most important fact to consider, when you look at the life-cycle of a metal roof
costing, replacing a roof is actually much cheaper to go with a metal roof system than it is to go with a traditional asphalt shingle roof. Simply because they are one and done...you nor the next person who lives in your home will ever have to replace it....so maybe it's a bit higher...but in the long run the cost, pain of replacing is much, much less!

Plus! Metal roofs offer great energy savings too. Metal roofs reflect the heat away to make your attic space cooler, reduce your energy use in the summertime, and will increase the value of your home, in most all cases, up to 80 percent of the initial cost of the investment -  if not ALL the investment can be recouped.

Metal Roofing Offers Cool Energy Bills

Did you know that compared to traditional, dark gray asphalt shingles and other non-metal roofs that last an average of 7-17 years and require replacing about every decade or two - METAL ROOFS ARE BETTER AND LAST LONGER. YES! Metal roofs last longer!

It is really true - a metal roof lifespan is about two to three times longer than any asphalt roof on today's market AND IS MADE FROM 100% RECYCLABLE MATERIAL TOO.

The Organic Truth About Metal Roofs!

There is no material for a roof more capable of protecting a structure from wind, rain, hail, fire, pests, or rot than the innovative, durable and energy-efficient metal roof available today.

Unfortunately asphalt roofs are made of materials that have a shorter life span due to the mere fact you cannot compare metal to organic materials such as waste paper, cellulose, or wood fiber and asphalt. Just like roads which need constant repair and replacement - asphalt roofs do as well. Metal is one and done!

National Energy Facts to Consider When Replacing Your Roof!

DID YOU KNOW?

• US households spend over $22 billion on air conditioning costs each year, which emits over 100
Million tons of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

• Electricity prices are projected to increase 19% by 2040.

• An Energy Star certified cool roof can reflect up to 66% of solar radiation, which keeps homes cooler and significantly reduces air conditioning costs and emissions.

• 31% of US greenhouse gas emissions come from the generation of electric power. Metal roofs can lower a home’s peak energy demand, which decreases the amount of energy power plants must produce. This reduces both cost and greenhouse gas emissions from the power plant.

• Lower demand also improves the energy grid and decreases the likelihood of power blackouts on
hot summer days.

Insurance Savings Come With Metal Roofs

The roof is the first layer of your home that wind, hail, wildfire and other hazards really begin to act on. This fact to a home insurance company, the roof is there for the most important part of your house to them and YOU. Why? Because it’s the gateway to far greater damage claims on your home once the roof is breached.

Standard asphalt shingles take a beating during wind and hail storms. That’s why insurance
companies offer big discounts (up to 45-55 percent) for tougher materials to be used on your roof. Before you choose a new roof,
talk to your insurance agent to learn about the exact discounts for materials other than standard asphalt. In most cases, metal roofing can and will give you the largest discount. You owe it to yourself to investigate and ask questions!

A metal roof is an investment that can truly make a difference in the value of your home, the quality of life, the amount of energy savings way beyond the actual cost of the metal roof itself.

Understanding the Lifecycle of an Asphalt Roof

The average useful life of an asphalt shingle is 7-15 years. Yes, unfortunately, Asphalt shingles have an incredibly short life cycle, over 11 billion tons of asphalt shingles per year go into our landfills annually.

Let's look at the lifecycle of the asphalt roof:

When a new roof is installed, family, friends and neighbors may have remarked how it enhanced the beauty of your home. However, research indicates aging of an asphalt roof begins soon after the shingles
are installed and progresses extremely rapidly during the initial curing phase of the asphalt roof lifecycle.
During this curing stage, granule loss may occur, small blisters may develop, or the shingles may curl slightly at their edges. You may even notice this curling is more pronounced during cold weather and the shingles may lie flat as temperatures rise.

The good news, however, is that after this curing stage the asphalt shingles enter a long period of slow aging, which lasts for the major portion of the shingle’s natural life until they need to be replaced.
